Ingredients

For the Patty Melts

  • 1 pound ground beef (80/20 for juicy goodness) Use ground turkey or beef alternatives if desired.
  • 1 medium onion, thinly sliced
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 4 slices your favorite bread (hearty rye or classic sourdough)
  • 4 slices Swiss cheese You can experiment with cheddar or pepper jack for a twist.
  • Butter, for toasting

For the Secret Sauce

  • 1/4 cup mayonnaise
  • 1 tablespoon ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon yellow mustard
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • A dash of hot sauce (optional) Recommended for a little kick.

Instructions

Preparation

  • In a small bowl, combine the mayonnaise, ketchup, mustard, garlic powder, and hot sauce if you dare. Stir until smooth. Taste it—you might want to reserve a spoonful for serving.

Cook the Onions

  • In a skillet over medium heat, melt a little butter and toss in the thinly sliced onions. Cook them gently until golden and caramelized—about 10 minutes, then remove from the pan.

Form and Cook the Patties

  • Season the ground beef with salt and pepper, form it into two equal patties, and cook for about 4–5 minutes on one side. Flip, add a slice of Swiss cheese on top, and cook for another 4 minutes until the patties are cooked through and the cheese is melting.

Assemble the Melts

  • Spread the secret sauce on one side of each slice of bread. On the un-sauced side, layer a cooked beef patty, followed by caramelized onions, and another slice of cheese. Top with another slice of bread, sauce-side up.

Toast the Sandwiches

  • Wipe down the skillet and melt more butter over medium heat. Cook the assembled sandwiches until golden and crispy—about 3–4 minutes on each side. Press down with a spatula to bond everything.

Serve

  • Slice your patty melts in half, serve with extra secret sauce for dipping, and enjoy!

Notes

Don’t worry if your sauce looks a little lumpy—it’s all part of the magic! Always adjust flavors to your liking.
