Ingredients for Patty Melt

  • 1 pound ground beef (preferably 80/20)
  • 1 medium onion, thinly sliced
  • 4 slices whole grain or rye bread Can use other types of bread
  • 4 slices American or Swiss cheese Choose based on preference
  • 2 tablespoons butter For grilling the sandwiches
  • to taste Salt and pepper For seasoning the beef

Preparation

  • In a skillet over medium heat, add a tablespoon of butter. Toss in the thinly sliced onions and cook until browned and caramelized, about 10-15 minutes.
  • In the same skillet, increase the heat to medium-high and add the ground beef. Season with salt and pepper. Cook until browned and no longer pink, about 5-7 minutes.
  • On two slices of bread, place a portion of the cooked beef, followed by the caramelized onions and cheese. Top with another slice of bread.
  • In the skillet, add the remaining tablespoon of butter. Grill the sandwiches until golden brown and crispy, about 3-4 minutes per side, until cheese is melted.
  • Remove sandwiches from the skillet, slice in half, and serve.

Notes

Use a cast-iron skillet for a perfect crust. Add sauce like mustard or blue cheese dressing for an extra kick. This dish is perfect for gatherings.
