  • 6-8 medium-sized apples 6-8 medium-sized apples (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp work wonderfully)
  • 1 teaspoon 1 teaspoon lemon juice Prevents browning of apples
  • 3/4 cup 3/4 cup granulated sugar Adjust if your apples are sweet
  • 1/4 cup 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons 2 tablespoons cornstarch Thickens the filling
  • 1 teaspoon 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1/8 teaspoon 1/8 teaspoon allspice (optional) Adds extra flavor
  • 1 pinch Pinch of salt
  • 2 tablespoons 2 tablespoons butter For rich flavor

Preparation

  • Peel, core, and slice the apples into thin wedges. Toss them with lemon juice to prevent browning.

Mix Ingredients

  • In a large bowl, mix the granulated sugar, brown sugar, cornstarch, cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, and salt.

Combine Mixtures

  • Pour the sugar mixture over the apples and gently mix to coat each wedge.

Cook Filling

  • In a large skillet over medium heat, melt the butter. Add the apple mixture and cook for about 5-7 minutes, stirring occasionally until the apples start to soften.

Cool and Store

  • Allow the filling to cool before using it in a pie crust. You can also store it in jars in the fridge for up to a week or freeze it for up to three months.

Notes

For the best flavor, use a mix of tart and sweet apples. If you’re out of cornstarch, you can use all-purpose flour instead as a thickener.
