Ingredients

Main Ingredients

  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup chopped nuts (optional) adds extra crunch
  • 1 cup chocolate chips adds sweetness

Instructions

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease your baking pan (a 9x9 inch pan works wonders).
  • In a bowl, cream together the softened butter and sugar until it becomes light and fluffy.
  • Beat in the eggs, one at a time, followed by the vanilla extract. Stir until well combined.
  • In another bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt. Gradually add this mixture to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined.
  • Stir in the chopped nuts and chocolate chips if using.
  • Pour the batter into your greased baking pan, spreading it evenly.

Baking

  • Bake for about 25-30 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
  • Allow your treats to cool in the pan for about 10 minutes. Once cooled, slice into squares or triangles.

Notes

To make these treats extra festive, try adding a dash of peppermint extract or swirling in some cranberry sauce before baking. Baking can be flexible; substitutions are encouraged.
