For the Frosting

  • 1 cup unsalted butter softened to room temperature
  • 3.5 cups powdered sugar
  • 0.5 cups unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 0.5 cups heavy cream

For the Explosion

  • 1 cup chocolate chips any kind you love!
  • to taste chocolate syrup or caramel for drizzling

Instructions

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
  • In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  • Add the eggs, milk, oil, and vanilla extract. Mix on medium speed until the batter is smooth. Gradually stir in the boiling water.

Baking

  • Divide the batter equally between the prepared pans and bake for 30-35 minutes. Check for doneness by inserting a toothpick; it should come out clean.
  • Cool the cakes in the pans for about 10 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.

Frosting

  • While the cakes are cooling, beat the softened butter until creamy (about 2 minutes). Gradually add the powdered sugar and cocoa powder, mixing on low speed until combined.
  • Then, add the vanilla and heavy cream, and beat until light and fluffy.

Assembly

  • Place one cake layer on a serving plate and spread a generous layer of frosting on top. Sprinkle with chocolate chips.
  • Top with the second layer, and frost the top and sides.
  • Drizzle the top with chocolate syrup or caramel, then top with more chocolate chips and candy.

Notes

Allow cakes to cool completely to prevent collapsing. You can experiment with flavors like espresso or peppermint for a twist. If you have extra ingredients like chopped nuts or chocolate bars, toss them between layers for a surprise.
