  • 1.5 cups granulated sugar
  • 1.5 tsp baking powder
  • 0.75 tsp baking soda
  • 0.75 tsp salt
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 0.5 cups vegetable oil
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 cup boiling water

For the Caramel Sauce

  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 6 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 0.5 cups heavy cream
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • pinch salt

For the Frosting

  • 1 cup unsalted butter (softened)
  • 3.5 cups powdered sugar
  • 0.33 cups unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 0.25 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 5 tbsp heavy cream

Instructions

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour (or use parchment paper) two 9-inch cake pans.
  • In a mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  • In another bowl, mix the eggs, milk, oil, and vanilla. Pour this into your dry mix and beat until well combined. Slowly add in boiling water and mix until smooth.

Baking

  • Divide the batter evenly between your prepared pans and bake for about 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.

Making Caramel

  • In a saucepan, cook the sugar over medium heat until it melts into a golden amber hue. Once melted, add butter, cream, vanilla, and salt. Stir until well combined.

Frosting

  • Beat the softened butter until creamy, then add powdered sugar, cocoa, salt, and vanilla. Gradually pour in cream until your desired consistency is reached.

Assembly

  • Place one layer of cake on the serving plate. Drizzle caramel sauce on top, spread a layer of frosting, stack the second layer, frost the top and sides, and drizzle more caramel sauce.

Serving

  • Slice the cake and serve it to your guests, preparing for all the compliments!

Notes

Don't skip boiling water for ultra-moist cake. Make the caramel ahead of time and keep it in the fridge for easy indulgence. Try adding a sprinkle of sea salt on top for a unique flavor.
